The Kelp Tank at the California Science Center is an impressive 712,000 liter (188,000 gallons) aquarium that is home to diverse marine animals such as sharks, moray eels, rays, rock bass, and spiny lobsters, along with more than 1,500 other fish. Kelp algae grow to enormous heights here, just like underwater ocean forests. The design of the tank consists of a sturdy concrete structure, acrylic viewing panels and a 24-metre-long walk-through tunnel at the bottom of the tank. A wave machine simulates the natural movement of the ocean, which exerts significant water forces on the structure, making waterproofing critical to resist pressure.

Products used

To meet the requirements of this aquarium, PENETRON and PENECRETE MORTAR were applied to the inside of the Kelp Tank. These products ensure complete waterproofing of the entire concrete water storage structure, so that the aquarium is optimally protected against water pressure and leakage.
