Buffer Tank — Bunge Project Amsterdam (HoogTij)
HoogTij
For the prestigious Bunge Project in the port of Amsterdam (HoogTij), a sustainable concrete buffer tank was built in collaboration with Biodynamics. The project is part of the construction of a new, ultra-modern production facility at Bunge Loders Croklaan. With an investment of more than 300 million euros, this factory is an important step in the food industry's energy transition and is one of the most sustainable refineries in Europe.
Project context
The new factory at the HoogTij industrial park will replace the former refinery on the Maasvlakte (Rotterdam) and will also take over production from Wormerveer. The complex is being built according to the latest technological standards and should lead to 40% energy savings and a 90% CO₂ reduction by 2030. Within this ambitious construction program, particular attention was paid to sustainable water management and structural concrete protection, for which Penetron Benelux provided its expertise.
Project description
Penetron Admix SB was chosen for the realization of the buffer tank, which is part of the internal water recovery and process circuit. By integrating the additive directly into the concrete mixture, the concrete itself becomes actively waterproof — without additional coatings or membranes. The crystalline technology provides permanent protection against water, chlorides and chemical attack, which is crucial in an industrial environment.
The concrete buffer structure consisted of two wall zones with a total volume of 540 m³ of concrete (234 m³ + 306 m³).
Implementation & guidance
The Penetron Admix SB was added directly to the concrete mixers in the concrete plant in soluble bags, allowing accurate dosing and easy processing. During the first deposits, Penetron Benelux was present for technical monitoring and control of the workability and homogeneity of the mixture.

Products used
- Penetron Admix SB: Crystalline additive for integral concrete waterproofing.
Outcome
The result is a fully watertight, low-maintenance buffer construction that supports the durability and reliability of the entire production complex. By integrating Penetron Admix SB, a concrete structure was obtained that permanently protects itself against water and chemical penetration. The project illustrates how technological innovation, sustainability and concrete expertise come together in a progressive industrial construction project in the Netherlands.
